The American Agriculture Movement supports the development of alternative energy production by using lesser polluting biodiesel, ethanol, and wind energy. But, AAM believes another source of energy capable of increasing energy independence and helping the economic development and jobs in rural America is overlooked. Gasification or combustion of agriculturally produced biomass can replace the use of some fossil fuel. Production of ethanol from corn benefits producers about $1 billion. By comparison use of excess AG biomass could increase farmers’ income by $10 billion or more. Excess Ag biomass can compete very well with fossil fuels provided a federal insurance price-floor is in place to prevent a sudden drop in fossil fuels impacting use of biomass on a long term basis.
